With winter approaching and colder temperatures starting to be felt across Norfolk and Suffolk, the NHS is encouraging people to take simple steps now to protect their health and wellbeing in the months ahead as it launches its Stay Well This Winter campaign.
The campaign, led by NHS Norfolk and Suffolk Integrated Care Board (ICB) brings together practical advice, local support and health information to help people stay physically and mentally well, get the care they need and support loved ones during what can be a challenging time of year.
It highlights vaccination as one of the most effective ways to prepare for winter. By accepting vaccination offers as early as possible, eligible people can give themselves the best possible protection against winter viruses.
Staying warm and well-nourished when the weather inevitably turns is another important way to protect your health. The ICB’s winter web pages contain links to local cost of living support as well as tips on eating well and staying connected – all of which can boost wellbeing and prevent ill-health.
However, not all seasonal ailments can be avoided, and as part of this campaign the NHS is urging people to be prepared for minor illnesses. Restocking your medicine cabinet now can help you be ready to manage symptoms quickly and comfortably at home.
For more urgent worries, the ICB is asking people to choose the NHS service most suited to their needs when they need help.
Local pharmacies are a source of advice and medication and can provide treatment for seven common conditions, including sore throat and sinusitis, without the need for a GP appointment.
If your need is more pressing, or you’re not sure which service to use, NHS 111 can help with physical health concerns, mental health support and urgent dental problems.
Alongside physical health, the campaign prioritises mental health and emotional wellbeing throughout the winter months.
Lisa Nobes, Executive Director of Nursing for NHS Norfolk and Suffolk Integrated Care Board, said: “While social media can often create pressure to spend more, do more and celebrate in a certain way, we’re encouraging people to remember that social media often shows only a highlights reel.
“We want people to feel like it’s okay to do “winter their way” by setting realistic expectations and prioritising activities that help boost wellbeing, such as staying active and keeping in touch with family, friends and neighbours.”
Health experts are also urging people to seek support early if they are struggling with their mental health.
Lisa also commented: “Now is the perfect time to think ahead and take a few simple steps to protect your health and wellbeing.
“Winter can be a wonderful time of year, but it can also bring challenges. Looking after your mental wellbeing, staying connected with others, keeping active, getting vaccinated when offered and knowing where to go for help can all make a real difference.
“We know that our brilliant communities across Norfolk and Suffolk will stick together this winter, and the NHS is here if you need it. Please don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.”
