Dr Mike Smith is a practising GP Partner with more than 20 years of experience in clinical leadership, healthcare policy development, and service transformation across local, system, and national healthcare settings.
Throughout his career, Mike has led major initiatives focused on improving patient care, integrating services, and strengthening the relationship between primary and secondary care. Most recently, he served as Special Advisor to the Medical Director at Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System, where he helped drive the integration of primary care within wider healthcare frameworks and played a key role in the development of Integrated Neighbourhood Teams to deliver more coordinated, community-focused care.
Mike also brings extensive operational management and service development experience. As Divisional Medical Director at the Royal Free London Hospital and Chief Executive Officer of Haverstock Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest GP federations, he led significant programmes at the interface between primary and secondary care. His achievements include the development of Urgent Care Centres, GP-led Frailty Wards, and joint outpatient clinics delivered in partnership with hospital consultants.
His contributions to healthcare have been recognised through several prestigious awards, including Clinical Leadership Team of the Year at the BMJ Awards and GP of the Year at the National GP Awards. Mike is also an experienced healthcare communicator, having regularly appeared on LBC Radio’s Health Hour, where he translated complex health policy issues for public audiences.
Mike joins the ICB bringing a wealth of leadership experience, a track record of successful healthcare transformation, and a strong commitment to improving outcomes for patients and communities.
